What's the Difference Between a Real Estate Agent, a Realtor, and a Broker?
People use these terms interchangeably all the time, and I understand why, they sound similar. But the differences actually matter for the person representing you. Darya Ghomeshi, a Compass agent and Life Member of the Sacramento Association of REALTORS, breaks down what each title really means.
Real Estate Agent
This is the baseline. A real estate agent is anyone who has completed the required coursework, passed the state licensing exam, and holds an active license, in my case a California DRE license. Every Realtor and broker starts here, but not every agent goes further.
Realtor
This one gets misused constantly. Realtor is a trademarked title that only applies to agents who are members of the National Association of REALTORS and agree to follow its Code of Ethics. Not every licensed agent is a Realtor. I've held this membership since the start of my career, and I've gone further, earning Life Member status with the Sacramento Association of REALTORS, which reflects sustained membership and production over many years.
Broker
A broker has completed additional education and experience requirements beyond a standard agent license, and passed a separate broker exam. Brokers can work independently or run their own brokerage, and agents typically work under a supervising broker. When you see Compass listed alongside my name, that's the brokerage I'm affiliated with as a licensed agent.
Why This Distinction Actually Matters to You
When you're choosing who represents you in one of the biggest financial decisions of your life, it's worth knowing whether the person holds an active license, whether they've committed to a code of ethics as a Realtor, and how long they've actually been active in your market. I'd encourage anyone to ask directly, rather than assuming every "agent" they meet has the same credentials.
How to Verify Someone's License
In California, you can look up any agent's license status directly through the California Department of Real Estate. My license, CA DRE# 01935449, is active and verifiable, and I think every client should feel comfortable checking that for anyone they're considering working with.
