Real Estate Agent

This is the baseline. A real estate agent is anyone who has completed the required coursework, passed the state licensing exam, and holds an active license, in my case a California DRE license. Every Realtor and broker starts here, but not every agent goes further.

Realtor

This one gets misused constantly. Realtor is a trademarked title that only applies to agents who are members of the National Association of REALTORS and agree to follow its Code of Ethics. Not every licensed agent is a Realtor. Broker

Brokers can work independently or run their own brokerage, and agents typically work under a supervising broker.
